Ariel Productions - Wembley card game (Green back)

1960s
Wembley card game (Green back) - playing card
Ariel Productions

32

The Wembley board game last almost 40 years from the 1950s through to the 1990s. Originally created by Ariel Productions and later issued by Gibson Games, each version came with 32 club cards. These chqnged from one version to another as clubs were promoted and relegated, and other clubs came in and went out of favour. For most versions the cards had rounded corners, though one was issued with square corners. Likewise most of the cards had red backs, but there was an orange version and also a green version. Monetary values also increased with time.

A set of cards came with each box, so they in themselve are not really collectable. But one-club collectors usually like to add their clubs cards to their collections. I have most of the Cardiff City variations in my own collection. It is the green version for which I am trying to compile a list of cards, I only know of the following:

A. & J. Donaldson / R.T. Muat - Sports Favourites

1984
Sports Favourites
R.T. Muat, Pencuick

3 known

The write up with these cards stated "Reproduction of an un-issued card drawn by John Barr for Donaldson's 'Sports Favourites'." Strange items that I've only recently became aware of. No idea how old they are. I've stated the 1950s, but I could be completely wrong. They must be very rare if they do come from the time when Donaldson's Sports Favourites were issued. Are there any others? Is it a coincidence that the three cards I know of are all Manchester City players?

The first of what will turn out to be quite a few American sets turning up on this blog. The previous season Burger King were the sponsors for a set of 20 cards featuring Wichita Wings players. I expect this set to contain something like that number of cards. The only players I know so far are:

? cut-outs

Another collection of newspaper cut-outs issued just after the Second World War. There were many different series, but they were all distinctive. This collection being unnumbered, two different Sportraits are shown above. It has always been my intention to go to the Newspaper Library at Colindale (it's now moved from there) to look for these in the actual newspapers. Do you know of any others?

Hokus-Pokus - Serie G: Sportler

1959
Serie G - Sportler
Hokus-Pokus Zauberphoto

38 (perhaps more)

I've had a couple of e-mails from Alan regarding this German set. I'll let him explain:

As requested, here is a larger scan of Billy Wright (front and back together). I trust it is sufficient for your needs?
Notice that the back is off center when compared to the front (some of the text is cut off). From what I am told, this is common with this series, as the cards were produced in large sheets and then cut. Often times, the front and backs didn't exactly line up. Quality control wasn't that "quality" in the mid to late 1950's. I have seen cards of other athletes from other Hokus Pokus series (boxers Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, and Rocky Marciano come to mind) with either all-German text on the back (like this Wright), or bilingual text on the back (German and English). I have also seen them blank-backed. The card grading companies here in the United States disagree on the year of issue for the Hokus Pokus cards. Beckett has "slabbed" them with a 1949 label. SGC has slabbed them with a 1959 label. I agree with the latter, given the soccer players included in the series, and the players participation in the 1958 World Cup. Feel free to use this information on your excellent blog. Maybe someone else can help us figure out a checklist?

Here's the list of known cards, can you confirm the number in the set and what the missing cards are?

Godfrey Phillips - Footballers (B.D.V. Sports Package)

1932
Footballers (B.D.V. Sports Package)
Godfrey Phillips
136

These 'cards' were cut from the cigarette package and can be found printed on paper or card. The collection consists of 136 cards, but there are many variations where the players name is printed with or without first names. When players changed clubs the team name was altered. Some club names have been shortened too.

The Cartophilic Society of Great Britain has produced many reference books for the hobby and one of these details all the known variations.

UPDATE: Please disregard this article. Gary Curtis has been in touch to let me know that this person is a Speedway rider....  I have this card and it is of Jack Parker the speedway rider, captain of Clapton (Lea Bridge) Saints, I think it could be from the set of Speedway Riders not Footballers.
The Arsenal player is Tom Parker, not Jack Parker.

The above card seems to have gone unrecorded.

The original card details:

Stars 3x1 (48 x 68mm)
Stars Aquarius (Croatia)

Croatia
164 cards + 11 Special cards

I thought I'd add another collection from one of the Balkan countries. These seem to appear on eBay from time to time. A set of 175 cards, including 11 'Special' cards.
Also shown is an additional collector card that was given away at some store, where you could add the players of Barcelona and Real Madrid. I don't have any further details on this item though.
UPDATE (14-03-2016 17:59):  Igor H. Crnojevac has informed me that there are actually two different sets of cards. This checklist is for the smaller cards - 48 x 68mm. The larger cards are 53 x 71mm. You can find a checklist for the larger cards here - Stars Aquarius (Croatia) - Stars 3x1 (53 x 71mm). The larger cards have five lines of data and the smaller cards have four lines (missing the player weight).
